Podcast Information

Once or twice monthy I publish (or weblish, as I like to say) a Podcast containing news from the site. The information below should help you find out everything you need to know, from learning what Podcasting is to receiving the Podcast when it's published.

What Is a Podcast?

Simply, its just another dandy way of providing content via the internet. A Podcast is an audio file usually containing speech (and other noises) that can be downloaded and played on iTunes (or other audio player) and, by extension, loaded onto iPod for portable listening.

Many Podcasters create Podcasts of their blogs, or speeches, or symposia, or discussions, or newscasts. The Podcasting revolution is just taking off, so no one really knows where the dust will settle. But one thing's for sure...it's fun!

You can subscribe to a Podcast much the same way you subscribe to a newsfeed with an RSS reader. In fact, Podcasts can be delivered via an RSS reader, like NetNewsWire, or directly subscribed to by using an application like iPodderX.

You can learn all about Podcasting at iPodder.org.

Doug's Podcast

Doug's Podcast is produced about every two weeks (so far). In it, I talk about some of the recent AppleScript postings to the site, answer some interesting email from Correspondents, and mention any topics I think iTunes AppleScripters would be interested in. It's generally about ten minutes long. I try not to make it to techy, or to say "uhm" too many times. (See, I worked on the radio for about twenty years before I started freelancing fulltime as an audio producer. This site and all the stuff I do with it is just my avocation.)

Receiving Doug's Podcast

Right now there are a few ways you can get my Podcast:

  • You can subscribe to the Doug's Podcast RSS feed. This is just an RSS feed (separate from my regular newsfeed) that contains the link to the Podcast audio, playable and savable via your web browser. It also lists HTML links to sites of interest I talk about in the Podcast—it would be rather awkward to speak most URLs! You can click on the audio link in the RSS feed and the audio will load in your web browser.

The newsreader I prefer over all others is NetNewsWire from Ranchero Software.

The latest version of NetnewsWire (v2.0) can download podcasts and add them to iTunes. However, I have written an AppleScript that you can download for free that will download the Doug's Podcast audio file from earlier versions of the NetNewsWire newsfeed and then add it to iTunes. It is available here.

  • You can subscribe to the Doug's Podcast RSS with Podcasting software. I prefer iPodderX. There is also iPodder, available via the distribution site at Sourceforge.

iPodderX will automatically get the latest Doug's Podcast and load it into iTunes for you. Then you can sync it to your iPod. Neat, huh?

One caveat: podcasting software won't allow you to get the accompanying accessory links I publish in the RSS newsfeed.

  • You can subscribe to the podcast via this link to the iTunes Music Store.

  • You can try to load the current Doug's Podcast in your browser. Just click and it should load in a new browser window.

As I mentioned above regarding iPodderX, listening by this method will deprive you of the accompanying accessory links in the RSS newsfeed.

My preference would be to subscribe in NetNewsWire for the links and subscribe in iPodderX to get the automatic download. Whatever method you use, I hope you enjoy the Podcast!
